In Sanatan Dharma, Ekadashi date is considered to have great religious importance. Although there are a total of 24 Ekadashis in a year, but among all these, ‘Nirjala Ekadashi’ (also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi) is considered the biggest and most important. It is believed that by keeping a waterless fast on just this one Ekadashi, one gets the virtuous results of fasting on all the 24 Ekadashis of the year. This is the reason that these days people are searching extensively on the internet regarding the exact date of Nirjala Ekadashi and a huge confusion has arisen among the devotees regarding this.
Why is there a shadow of confusion looming over the dates this year?
Generally, whenever any confusion arises regarding the date of any fast or festival, the reason behind it is the spread of the date over two days or the change of Udayatithi. People are often confused whether to keep the fast today or tomorrow. But this year the confusion regarding Nirjala Ekadashi is not of one or two days but of an entire month. Devotees are not able to understand whether the Mahavrat of Nirjala Ekadashi falling in Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha is in the month of May or June. The main reason behind this huge confusion is the ‘Purushottam month’ (Adhikamas) falling in the calendar this year.
2 additional Ekadashi increased with arrival of Purushottam month
According to astrological calculations and rules, the month of Jyeshtha started from May 2 this year. On normal days, the Ekadashi of its Shukla Paksha should have fallen on 27th May, which was traditionally considered as Nirjala Ekadashi. But this has not happened this year. ‘Purushottam Maas’ i.e. Adhikamas has started right from the middle of Jyeshtha month, due to which two additional Ekadashis have increased in this month, which are known as ‘Padmini Ekadashi’ and ‘Param Ekadashi’.
Due to this change of Adhikamas (Malamas), now the main Nirjala Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month will be celebrated with full devotion on the next month i.e. 25th June 2026 after the end of this Adhikamas.
The first ‘Padmini Ekadashi’ fast of Jyeshtha Adhikamas will be observed tomorrow.
Amidst this big change, the fast of the first Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Adhikamas, which is also known as ‘Padmini Ekadashi’ or ‘Kamal Ekadashi’, will be observed tomorrow i.e. on 27th May. Immediately after this, the fast of the second Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Adhikamas, which is called ‘Param Ekadashi’, will be observed on 11th June next month.
According to the exact calculation of the Panchang, this Ekadashi tithi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha Adhikamas has started on 26th May at 05:10 AM and will end on 27th May at 06:21 AM. In such a situation, based on the universally accepted principle of Udayatithi, the holy fast of Padmini Ekadashi will be observed on 27th May, Wednesday only. The auspicious time to break this fast will be from 05:25 am to 07:56 am on 28th May.
