After passing 12th (PCB/PCM) from Medical and Science stream, students are often confused whether they should choose the path of Pharmacy for their future or step into the field of Biotechnology. Both these courses are considered to be the strongest pillars of today’s modern healthcare and research sector. But the method of study, scope of work and career paths of both of them are quite different from each other. If you also want to take a big decision regarding your career, then before taking admission, it is very important for you to understand in detail the main difference between these two courses, the future scope and the salary package available.
Know what is pharmacy and the main focus of study in it
Pharmacy is a field mainly related to the science of medicines. Under this course, students are taught in detail about the manufacturing of medicines, their discovery, chemical composition, determination of dosage and their effects on the human body. For admission in this, students can choose 2 year diploma (D.Pharma) or 4 year degree (B.Pharma). After completing your studies in this field, you become a certified and registered pharmacist. Its main focus is to deliver correct and safe medicines to the patients under the existing medical system.
What is biotechnology and why is its craze increasing?
On the other hand, biotechnology is a very modern and research-oriented field, in which a unique combination of biology and advanced technology is seen. Within this course, students are taught to develop new products that improve human life by using living organisms, cells and biological systems. In this you can do 3 years degree (B.Sc Biotechnology) or 4 years engineering course (B.Tech Biotechnology). Its main focus is to bring new scientific changes in the field of genetics, vaccine manufacturing, DNA mapping, cancer research and agriculture.
Battle of career scope: Where are the maximum job opportunities?
In terms of career opportunities, both the regions have their own huge market. After completing pharmacy, you have a safe and evergreen option to become a hospital pharmacist, clinical research associate, drug inspector, quality control manager or start your own pharmaceutical company and medical store. Whereas in the field of biotechnology, doors of big research laboratories, bio-pharma companies, genetic engineering firms and food processing industries open for you, where you can work as a biochemist, medical scientist or lab technician. However, for better growth in biotechnology, it is considered almost mandatory to do Master’s degree (M.Sc / M.Tech) or PhD (PhD) after graduation.
Reality of salary package: Which course will give you the biggest income?
The salary structure of these two courses depends on the nature of their work, both at the local level (Geographical Impact) and in the global market. A fresher B.Pharma graduate can easily get an average starting package of ₹2.5 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh per annum in pharma companies in India, which can go up to ₹8 to ₹12 lakh after gaining experience and reaching government posts like Drug Inspector. On the other hand, in the field of biotechnology, the starting salary may be slightly less i.e. ₹3 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh per annum, but if you move into Research and Development (R&D) or join a multinational company (MNC) at a global level, then your package can go above ₹15 to ₹25 lakh per annum. If you are interested in medicines and business then pharmacy is better, and if you are interested in new discoveries and laboratories, then biotechnology will prove to be the best choice for you.
