Pitru Paksha will start in the year 2026 26 September 2026 (Saturday) culminating in 10 October 2026 (Saturday) It will coincide with Sarvapitri Amavasya. During these 16 days, Shraddha, Tarpan and Pind Daan are performed for the peace of the ancestors’ souls. According to religious beliefs, during this period our ancestors come to earth in subtle form and accept the offerings made by family members and bestow blessings.

Special significance of Matri Navami and Sarvapitri Amavasya

If you have forgotten the date of death of any of your ancestors, then by performing their Shraddha on this day, they attain salvation and get freedom from Pitra Dosh. Pitru immersion is also done on this day.

Auspicious time for Shraddha and Tarpan

According to astrology, it is always considered best to perform Shraddha rituals in the afternoon (Kutup Muhurta). Performing Shraddha in the morning or evening is prohibited.

Kutup Muhurat: Between 11:45 and 12:30 pm.

Rauhina Muhurta: Between 12:30 pm to 01:15 pm.

For tarpan, water, black sesame, barley and kusha should be used in a copper vessel. During this time, there is a tradition of preparing Satvik food and feeding it to Brahmins and offering Panchabali (sacrifice of cow, dog, crow, ant and god).
