In Bollywood, whenever there is talk of completely getting into a character, Aamir Khan’s name comes first. He is not called “Mr. Perfectionist” for nothing. For each of his films, he does something which is remembered for years. One such incident is related to his blockbuster film ‘PK’, for which he did something for which he also had to pay the price.
In Rajkumar Hirani’s film ‘PK’, released in 2014, Aamir Khan played the role of an alien who comes to Earth from another planet. Hardly anyone has seen Aamir eating paan in real life, but for this film he chewed so many paan that people still remember this.
A Panwadi was always with me on the set.
In the film, the character of ‘PK’ comes to Earth and learns its customs and language. During this time, he develops the habit of eating betel leaves and is seen holding betel leaves in his mouth all the time. To bring life to this character, Aamir had actually developed the habit of eating paan.
In an interview, he himself told that to make his role look real, there was a panwadi present on the set all the time, whose job was only to make paan for Aamir.
Why did you eat 100 betel leaves a day?
Aamir had told that he did not want to make his character’s lips look red by applying lipstick, but wanted them to look naturally red after eating paan. Moreover, when someone chews paan in his mouth, his way of speaking and accent changes. Aamir wanted exactly the same natural style. Therefore, he would chew betel leaves throughout the day and at times the count would reach up to 100 betel leaves in a day.
Had to pay the price for perfection
The film became a superhit and Aamir’s character was also well liked, but he had to pay a heavy price for this perfection. Due to continuous chewing of paan, he had developed blisters in his mouth, due to which he was in a lot of trouble. Despite this, he did not compromise with his character and continued eating paan.
His co-star in the film, Anushka Sharma had also told that she felt very bad seeing Aamir’s condition, because she knew how much pain Aamir was going through, yet he used to do all this to make the shot perfect.
This film was made for around Rs 85 crore, but it created history by earning more than Rs 700 crore worldwide. This was the result of the same dedication and perfection of Aamir Khan.
