The day of Ahoi Ashtami is very special for every mother. This is the day when mothers observe a fast without eating or drinking anything for the long life, good health and happiness of their children. As important is the worship of this fast, it is equally important to listen to its story. It is said that without this story this fast remains incomplete.

So, today let us tell you the same story, which made this fast so special.

Story of a full family

Long time ago, there lived a moneylender in a city who had seven sons. The festival of Diwali was about to come and preparations for painting were going on in the house. The moneylender’s wife went to collect soil from the forest to plaster the walls of the house.

And then that unfortunate thing happened

When she was digging the soil with a spade, her spade accidentally hit the den of a Syahu built nearby. Sehi is an animal, and its small children were sleeping in that den. A child died at the same time due to injury from a hoe.

Seeing her child dead, the mother became very angry and she cursed the moneylender’s wife, “Just as you have killed my child, you will also yearn for your child in the same way.”

The effect of the curse and the pain of a mother

The effect of this curse was so terrible that within a year all the seven sons of the moneylender died one by one. The husband and wife were completely devastated after losing all their children. His cheerful home was destroyed.

One day, when he was completely dejected, he decided to commit suicide. Then Goddess Parvati appeared there and stopped him from doing so. When the moneylender’s wife tearfully narrated her entire story, Mother Parvati showed her the path of repentance.

When devotion changed fate

Mother Parvati said, “You go to the same Sehi’s den and worship her and ask for forgiveness for your mistake. She is the form of the goddess and will be pleased with your devotion and forgive you.”

The moneylender’s wife did exactly the same. It was the day of Ahoi Ashtami. He fasted the whole day, being hungry and thirsty, and worshiped Sehi Mata with true devotion. Seeing his true devotion, dedication and repentance, Sehi Mata’s heart melted. She was pleased and appeared before him. He not only forgave the moneylender, but also brought his seven sons back to life.

It is said that from that day onwards every mother observes this holy fast of Ahoi Ashtami for the protection and long life of her children and completes her fast after listening to this story.
