The Indus Water Treaty is a historic water agreement signed between India and Pakistan in 1960. It was signed by the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and the President of Pakistan Field Marshal Ayub Khan and was armed by the World Bank. The purpose of this treaty was to peacefully resolve any dispute between India and Pakistan regarding the water sharing of the Indus river system. This is the first time India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty.
About 80 percent of Pakistan’s agricultural irrigation is dependent on the water of the Indus River. India’s ban on the Indus Water Treaty will create water crisis in Pakistan and affect agriculture.
