Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men and occurs in the prostate gland, which is located below the bladder and near the penis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it affects millions of men worldwide every year. It is most common in men over the age of 50.

The risk of prostate cancer increases because it is hereditary. It is higher in Europe and the United States, while it is slightly lower in Asia. It often occurs without any symptoms in the early stages, so timely screening and PSA testing is important.

Prostate cancer is primarily adenocarcinoma, which develops in the cells of the gland. Rarer types such as squamous cell carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma are also found. Its main reasons include increasing age, genetic factors, hormonal imbalance and unhealthy lifestyle.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

Dr. Rohit Kapoor of Max Hospital explains that the initial symptoms of prostate cancer may seem mild and resemble common urinary problems, making them easy to ignore. The main symptoms include difficulty urinating, frequent urination, getting up frequently at night to urinate, and a burning or slow stream when urinating.

Serious symptoms include blood in the urine, persistent pain in the back or hips, swelling in the legs, weakness, and weight loss. If cancer grows, it may spread to the bones and other organs, causing serious health problems. Early detection and treatment can prolong the patient’s life. It can be controlled with timely medical advice and regular checkups.
