Weather Update 18 July: Alert of heavy rain in 15 states including UP-Bihar, monsoon returns with a bang; Humidity will haunt Delhi-NCR


New Delhi/Lucknow. Big news is coming from the Meteorological Department for the people of many states of the country troubled by the scorching heat and humidity. Due to the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal, monsoon has once again become fully active in the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of torrential rains along with thunderstorms in 15 to 17 states of the country including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal today i.e. on July 18, 2026. During this period, there is a possibility of strong winds blowing at a speed of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour and lightning in many areas. According to meteorologists, this withdrawal of monsoon can cause huge trouble in North and East India for the next 4 to 5 days.

Alert of torrential rain in 31 districts of Uttar Pradesh

After the re-activation of monsoon in UP, the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in 31 districts of the state for Saturday, July 18. Especially in many districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh (Purvanchal) including Varanasi, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Azamgarh, Kushinagar, Mau, Ballia and Basti, there is an alert of lightning along with torrential rain. According to IMD, this period of rain in UP is going to start from July 18 and continue till July 23, due to which there will be a huge drop in the temperature.

Disaster rain in Bihar, Jharkhand and Bengal

Today is going to be a very sensitive day for the states of Eastern India. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert of torrential rain with thunder and lightning in Bihar and Jharkhand. At the same time, there is a possibility of ‘extremely heavy rainfall’ in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on July 18 and 19. Due to heavy rains, the Meteorological Department has given strict instructions to the farmers to make proper drainage arrangements in the fields and to the common people to stay away from waterlogged and flooded areas.

Humidity in Delhi-NCR, relief expected in the afternoon

People living in the capital Delhi and its surrounding areas (Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram) are currently facing the scorching heat. It will be partly cloudy in Delhi-NCR today. However, there is a possibility of light rain or drizzle in some areas during the afternoon or evening, which may provide minor relief. The maximum temperature in Delhi today is expected to be around 36 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi will see more widespread and heavy rains between July 20 and 22.

Condition of hill states and central India

Monsoon continues to wreak havoc on the mountains also. Heavy rain has been warned in many parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh today. Orange Alert has been issued in five districts of Himachal from July 19, where the danger of landslides and flash floods is looming. Apart from this, thunderstorm activities will continue in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Gujarat today.
