In today’s busy life, we often keep running after wealth and success. But do you know that true happiness and inexhaustible prosperity comes not by leaving someone behind or insulting them, but by respecting and helping others? This good thought of Sanatan culture reminds us that our small goodness and our behavior towards others makes our life happy.
During the Mahabharata period, Mahatma Vidur, while preaching the policy to King Dhritarashtra, had said a very important verse, which even today is the biggest mantra of success for every family and householder.
That famous verse of Vidur Niti and its deep meaning
Mahatma Vidur had said about the people following Grihastha Dharma:
Chatwari te tat grihe vasanthu sriyabhijushtasya grihasthadharme. Old man, knowledgeable person, noble friend, poor friend, sister in law.
Meaning: Oh father! In the house of a fortunate householder in whom Goddess Lakshmi resides, these four types of people always find shelter or residence in his house – first, the elders of the family; Second, a noble (civilized) person caught in trouble or bad times; Third, a poor or indigent friend; and a fourth, childless sister. The householder who respects these four with all his heart and provides shelter to them, never faces poverty.
1. Respect for elderly family members (elders are the backbone of the house)
Respecting and serving the elders in the house is the first and most essential principle of Vidur Niti. Elders are not only old in age, but they are also a symbol of experience and divine blessings for the entire family. When people are listened to, respected and their health and needs are taken care of in a house, then positive energy is transmitted there. Vidur ji says that in a house where the elders are neglected or considered a burden, happiness and peace go away forever.
2. Helping a noble person in trouble
A noble person means a person who is cultured, has good conduct and who had once seen good times, but due to the change of times, today he is in great trouble or distress. According to Vidur Niti, helping such a self-respecting person without hurting his self-respect is an act of great virtue. When we become the support of a simple and distressed person, nature provides us with more prosperity. On the contrary, making fun of or ignoring the helplessness of such a helpless person hinders the prosperity of the house.
3. Support of a poor friend (test of true friendship)
The real meaning of true friendship is to be together in happiness and hand in sorrow. Vidur ji says that if any of your friends is financially weak or poor, then never consider him lesser than you and never ignore or insult him. The person who gives equal status to his poor friend and secretly helps him in adverse situations, there is never any shortage of wealth in his house. People who build a wall of wealth and poverty in friendship never get true respect in the society.
4. Respect and affection for a childless sister
This point has been given a special and extremely sensitive status in the Vidur policy. It is often seen in the society that a childless sister or daughter has to suffer neglect or inferiority complex in the family. The scriptures say that doing so is a grave sin and it destroys the prosperity of the entire clan. Our childless sister should be respected like a mother and a real goddess. By giving him full respect and safe place in the family, there is always happiness, peace and special blessings of Goddess Lakshmi in the house.
By following these policies poverty will never come in life
The essence of Vidur Niti is that happiness and prosperity do not depend only on hard work or luck, but for this it is very important to have good conduct and moral values. A person who respects these four people never feels alone at any stage of life. Gods always reside in his house, financial condition remains strong, family relationships become sweet and mental peace is maintained. The person who insults them out of arrogance gradually becomes isolated in the society and his own family. Implement these great policies in your life from today itself, then see how happiness itself knocks at your door.
