According to legend, once sage Durvasa received a divine Parijat rosary from Lord Shiva. Very happy, the sage was carrying the garland, when on the way he met Lord Indra riding on the elephant Airavata. The sage presented that divine garland to Indra as a mark of respect.

Indra, intoxicated with pride, did not understand the importance of that garland and placed it on the head of his elephant Airavata. The elephant dropped that garland and trampled it under its feet. Seeing such an insult to his gift and the offerings of Lord Shiva, Sage Durvasa became red with anger.

That terrible curse of Durvasa: Gods became devoid of Lakshmi.

Sage Durvasa at that very moment cursed Indra that Lakshmi, in whose arrogance he had insulted “Shri” (Lakshmi and Aishwarya), would leave him. By the effect of curse:

Sacrifice of Lakshmi: Mother Lakshmi immediately left heaven and heaven and merged into the milky ocean.
