The gun culture and mass shooting incidents in the United States are not stopping. An outdoor homecoming block party early Sunday morning in Vienna, located in Dooley County in southern Georgia, turned into a bloody clash when unknown assailants suddenly opened fire indiscriminately. In this late night party, hundreds of youth were dancing and singing to the tune of loud DJ music and the atmosphere was completely immersed in celebration. Meanwhile, at about 1:30 a.m. suddenly there was a loud crackling noise like that of an automatic weapon. Initially, people did not understand anything due to the loud beats of music and the sound of firecrackers, but when one after another people started falling on the ground drenched in blood, there was a huge commotion. In this unexpected and deadly firing, at least two youths died on the spot, while 35 other people were seriously injured. As soon as information about the incident was received, the entire area was converted into a cantonment and American investigative agencies reached the spot.
According to eyewitnesses, the atmosphere of the party was very pleasant and more than one thousand people attended the block party. As soon as the first shot was fired, dozens of rounds of bullets started flying in the blink of an eye. An eyewitness told local media that the sound was as if someone had pressed the trigger of an automatic machine gun. As soon as they heard the sound of bullets, people started hiding under the tables to save their lives, started looking for cover behind the walls and started running like mad towards the road. A stampede broke out amid darkness and chaos. Many of the youth who were running to save their lives were crushed under each other’s feet, while many people got injured after being hit by panicked vehicles running at high speed on the road. There were blood splatters, shoes, slippers, mobile phones and broken cups and glasses scattered all around on the ground, which were testifying to that horrific scene.
As soon as information about the firing was received, local police, paramedics and ambulance vehicles reached the spot with sirens blaring. The injured young men and women were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals. A state of emergency was declared in Dooley County and nearby Crisp Regional Hospital, where more than 26 injured people were brought into the emergency ward alone. According to doctors, many victims have sustained serious bullet wounds in the chest, stomach, back and legs, some of whom are in a critical condition. Two extremely serious patients have been airlifted and referred to a major trauma center for better treatment and surgery. A huge crowd of frightened family members gathered outside the hospitals, who were seen crying and crying to get news about the safety of their children. The police have taken possession of the bodies of the deceased and sent them for post-mortem and the process of their identification is being completed.
Considering the seriousness of the incident, the state’s top investigating agency ‘Georgia Bureau of Investigation’ (GBI) has taken over the entire investigation of the case. Dooley County Sheriff Craig Peavy and senior GBI officials visited the scene and collected preliminary evidence. The forensic team has recovered dozens of empty cartridges, bullet shells and ballistic evidence from the incident site. In the initial investigation, it is suspected that the firing started due to some old enmity or immediate dispute between the two groups present in the party, which took a gruesome turn in no time. Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby houses and shops and videos streamed live on social media by people present at the party to identify the faces of the gunmen. The Sheriff’s Department has appealed to local citizens who have any footage or information related to the incident to immediately contact the Secret Helpline.
This latest bloody incident has once again sparked a serious debate over the easy availability of deadly weapons and weak gun laws in America. According to the data of ‘Gun Violence Archive’, hundreds of mass shooting incidents have been recorded in America so far this year, in which countless innocent people have lost their lives. Social activists and local leaders have expressed deep grief over the incident and said that such violence cannot be acceptable in a normal celebration of a town. The demand for a strict ban on the open sale of semi-automatic rifles and illegal firearms in the country and tightening of background checks has again gained momentum. At present, the entire city of Vienna is in deep shock and panic, while the police are conducting rapid raids at different locations to nab the attackers.
