The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to re-review about 13 lakh e-challans waived off between 2017 and 2021.

Why are closed cases being reopened?
Actually, this big step has been taken after a strict comment by the Supreme Court. The Hon’ble Court had expressed deep concern over such blanket waiver of serious traffic violations (such as rash driving, overspeeding or dangerous driving). The court believes that this compromises road safety. After this order, the Transport Department of UP has been given the full responsibility of weeding out these old challans and re-implementing serious cases.

On which challans will the penalty fall? District committees are being formed
Challans of these three categories will be activated again
The government is going to constitute special committees at the district level, which will mainly investigate the following three types of cases closely:

Non-Compoundable Offences: Serious traffic violations which cannot be settled by paying a small fine on the spot or by mutual agreement.

Cases punishable with jail: For breaking the rules, the provision of direct jail sentence has been fixed by the court under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Habitual Offenders: Such vehicle owners whose past record has been of repeatedly flouting traffic rules.
The data shortlisted by these committees will be updated online through the main portal of National Informatics Center (NIC).
