A major and unexpected turn has come in international diplomacy amid the ongoing bloody conflict between Russia and Ukraine. US President Donald Trump has given a big statement expressing open anger over the working style and war policies of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. While talking to reporters on Saturday, Trump bluntly said that now the time has come for Ukraine to get a new President who is capable of making a peace deal. Trump accused Zelensky that he had many opportunities for peace negotiations and an armistice with Russia, but he deliberately rejected each agreement. Trump’s statement has created a sensation in the diplomatic circles of Washington, Kiev and the European Union, because this is the first time that a sitting US President has publicly advocated changing the supreme leadership of the war-torn ally country.
The immediate reason for Donald Trump’s strong anger is Ukraine’s continuous drone and missile attacks on Russia’s diesel refineries and oil infrastructure. Trump, speaking to the media, said that he had already clearly warned Zelensky not to target Russian oil and fuel refineries. Trump said in a harsh tone that we told Zelensky to do whatever you want with Russia, but do not attack the refineries because diesel shortage has become a global crisis. Trump said that despite warnings, Ukraine continued to directly attack Russian diesel plants, causing fuel prices to skyrocket around the world and directly burdening American farmers and the general public. Trump warned Zelensky that he would have to stop these attacks immediately at any cost.
Trump’s statement comes just a day after his long talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and a major diesel supply agreement between Russia and America. According to Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin’s foreign policy adviser in Moscow, Putin and Trump had a telephonic conversation on Friday for about 90 minutes in a very positive, practical and friendly atmosphere, in which both leaders did not want to hang up first. Soon after, the Trump administration announced plans to import millions of tons of diesel from Russia and ease restrictions on Russian diesel exports to control skyrocketing fuel prices in the US. This decision clearly shows that Trump is now in favor of direct dialogue and economic transactions with Putin, while on the other hand his attitude towards the Ukrainian leadership is becoming increasingly harsh.
There has been a very sharp reaction from Ukraine on this stance of Trump and the US-Russia diesel agreement. President Volodymyr Zelensky lodged a strong protest on the social media platform X, calling it a betrayal of the unity of Ukraine and the West. Zelensky wrote that Russia expressed gratitude for the lifting of the ban on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential areas of Zaporizhia. Zelensky further said that any concession or gift given to Putin cannot bring peace to the civilized world, but it gives a message to Moscow that it can continue bombing cities without fear. The Ukrainian President also clarified that strategic partners do not behave like this with each other.
Targeting Zelensky, Donald Trump placed the entire blame for the loss of life and property in the war on the inefficiency of the Ukrainian leadership. Trump said that if he had been in power in 2022, this war would not have started. According to Trump, due to Zelensky’s wrong strategies, Ukraine has lost more than 30 percent of its country’s territory and millions of soldiers and civilians from both sides have lost their lives. Trump believes that if the Ukrainian leadership had adopted a realistic approach in time, this destructive conflict could have stopped much earlier. Trump’s statement has also raised serious questions over the future of US military and financial aid to Ukraine in the coming weeks, which has increased the concerns of Europe and NATO allies.
