There are many beautiful buildings built by the Nawabs in Lucknow, but there is a place which is not a palace even through the palace. It is a beautiful ruins, a silent diary of history, and the first fight for freedom fought in 1857. This is the British Residency.
It is said that the walls also have ears, but the walls here speak. Even today, thousands of traces of cannon balls and gunfire are alive, which narrates the story of the dreadful manzar when this place became the biggest field of war between the soldiers fighting for the independence of India and the British rule.
Ever the most luxurious place of Lucknow
This story begins between 1780–1800, when it was built by Nawab Asafuddaula and Saadat Ali Khan. It was a three-fantastic building on the highest mound in Lucknow. It was actually a home and office of the British officer (resident) living in Lucknow. It was a small city, inside which there was a banquet hall, treasure, church, mosque, stables, and home to live. In summer, room (basement) under the ground was also built for coolness. Special for its safety Belly Guard Gate Was built.
When the fort became a luxurious kothi
Everything was fine, but the fire of the 1857 revolution changed the fate of this luxurious kothi forever. When Hindustani soldiers blew the bugle of rebellion, all the British officers, memes and children present in Lucknow took refuge in this residency. On seeing this, this luxurious kothi turned into a fort.
The longest and terrible siege of history started again. For months, Hindustani soldiers from outside continued to attack with cannons and guns, and from inside the British continued to fight to save their lives. Thousands of people including British Commander Sir Henry Lawrence were killed in this battle. Even today, their graves are present in the cemetery near the Residency.
Ruins, who even tell the story of bravery even today
When the fight was over, this beautiful building had turned into a ruin. After the victory, the British decided to leave it in the same place, so that it could tell the story of their ‘bravery’. But today these ruins remind us of the bravery and sacrifice of thousands of anonymous Hindustani soldiers, who almost won the strongest hideout of the British, not caring for their lives.
Today this place is under the supervision of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Walking between its lawn and flower beds, when you touch the walls riddled with bullets, it seems as if you have reached that era of history.
Museum of 1857
One inside this campus 1857 Memorial Museum There is also, which tells the whole story of that great freedom struggle through pictures and videos.
Residency is not just a tourist spot, it is a feeling, a lesson. It reminds us that we have got freedom after how many sacrifices we have got.
