Mumbai: Government sources said that the decision to resume wheat supply through public distribution system will be taken after completion of wheat procurement at support price. The government has estimated that wheat production in the country will be 115 million tonnes during the crop year 2024-25 (July to June).
The government has targeted to purchase 31.2 million tonnes of wheat on support price this year. Sources in the Food Ministry said that so far 25.6 million tonnes of wheat has been purchased on the support price.
In 2022, due to the procurement of wheat on the support price, the government cut the supply of wheat through the public distribution system and began to provide more rice instead.
However, this deduction was partially implemented in 2024. As of April 30 this year, government procurement of 25.6 million tonnes of wheat is 24.78 percent more than the same period last year. By 30 April last year, 20.5 million tonnes of wheat was purchased.
The support price of wheat for the current season has been fixed at Rs 2,425 per quintal.
Sources further said that in view of the good production of wheat this year, it is too early to say anything about the removal of the ban on export of wheat.
In the current season, wheat was sown in a total of 32.6 crore hectare area in the country, out of which 29.9 crore hectares, ie 92 percent sowing in Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Bihar.
