In Sanatan Dharma and Vedic Astrology, the beginning of Chaturmas is considered a very sacred and important period of change in cosmic energy and divine power. This year, on the auspicious occasion of Devshayani Ekadashi, the rules of arrangement and operation of the entire universe are going to change for four months. According to mythological beliefs, during these four months Lord Shri Hari Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra in Kshir Sagar, after which the entire responsibility of operation, maintenance and destruction of this entire creation is taken over by the Lord of Gods, Mahadev. During this time the whole world remains bowed at the feet of Lord Shiva.
Shiva power will start from Devshayani Ekadashi: Know its spiritual significance
Chaturmas starts from the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month, which is called Devshayani Ekadashi. From this day till Devuthani Ekadashi of Kartik month, all types of auspicious functions like marriage, mundan, sacred thread and house warming are completely banned. During this period Lord Shiva becomes the sole controller of the creation. According to astrology, spiritual energy in the universe is at its peak during this time, hence chanting, penance and charity done during this period provides inexhaustible virtue.
Lord Shiva will be the preserver and destroyer: great coincidence of sadhana in Saavan and Bhado
During these four months come the months of Shravan (Saavan), Bhadrapada (Bhado), Ashwin and Kartik. In this, the month of Sawan is completely dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. Since Mahadev also plays the role of guardian of the universe during this period, his worship immediately removes all the troubles, diseases and financial difficulties from the life of the devotees. And in the destroyer form, he destroys the negativity, ego and sins within us. This is the reason why there is a rush of devotees in all the major Jyotirlingas and Shivalayas of the country during this period.
What to do and what not to do in Chaturmas: It is important to follow these strict rules
During this auspicious period, some strict rules have been prescribed in Ayurveda and scriptures for the seekers and common people. It is mandatory to adopt a virtuous lifestyle during Chaturmas. During these four months, one should completely stay away from Tamasic food, garlic, onion, meat and alcohol. Also, giving up green vegetables in Saavan, curd in Bhado, milk in Ashwin and pulses in Kartik is considered good from health and religious point of view. During this time, sleeping on the ground, following celibacy and continuously chanting the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivay’ opens the closed doors of luck.
