Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has made another important achievement in the field of space research. ISRO has succeeded in germinating seeds in microgravity. The objective of this experiment is to understand the growth of plants and their adaptation process in space.

What is ISRO’s new achievement?

  • ISRO on Saturday informed on
  • This seed is rich in nutrients and looks like cowpea seeds.
  • Leaves are expected to emerge from the seeds soon.

Experiment under Crops Project

  • For this experiment, ISRO had sent a total of 8 seeds into space.
  • These were sent under the Compact Research Module for Orbital Plant Studies (CROPS).
  • Vikram Sarabhai Space Center successfully conducted this test.

PSLV-C60 mission and POEM-4 platform

  • 30 December 2024: PSLV-C60 mission places two SpaceX satellites in space.
  • In the fourth phase of this mission, the POEM-4 platform is conducting experiments in Earth’s orbit at an altitude of 350 kilometers.
  • A total of 24 types of experiments are running on this platform.

Purpose of germinating seeds in space

  • The main objective of this experiment is to understand the ways in which plants grow in adverse conditions.
  • Understanding plant growth in space will open new possibilities for long-term space missions and human presence.
  • Further strategies will be made by analyzing the results of these experiments.

New expectations related to chaser satellite

ISRO shared selfie video of Chaser satellite in Space Docking Experiment (Spadex).

  • The satellite is revolving in the Earth’s orbit at an altitude of 470 km.
  • If this test is successful, India will become the fourth country to do so after Russia, America and China.

Scientific preparation for seed germination

  • Special arrangements were made for seed germination in space:
    • Camera imaging: To record seed development.
    • Oxygen and carbon dioxide monitoring.
    • Balance of temperature and soil moisture.
  • Scientists are deeply analyzing these data.
