News India Live, Digital Desk: If you too have been troubled by fraud calls and fake messages coming from unknown numbers, then there is a great news for you. The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) of the Government of India has taken over 2 crore fake mobile connections across the country, taking the biggest action on cyber criminals and thugs so far. Since this move of the government, there has been a huge reduction of up to 97 percent in the spuff calls (ie calls using someone else’s identity).
How was this big operation done?
The government’s ‘communication partner’ portal and a highly advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool ‘ASTR’ (Artificial Intelligence and Facial Recognition Powered Solution for Telecom Sims Subscriber Verification) are behind this major success.
- ASTR Tool: This special tool identifies all the mobile numbers taken in the name of the same person or using the same photo. It caught millions of cases where hundreds of SIM cards were issued on the picture of the same person.
- Communication Partner Portal: Through this portal, common citizens can see how many SIM cards are running in their name. If a number is taken without their knowledge, they can immediately report to block it.
Why was this action necessary?
According to the Department of Telecommunications, these 2 crore mobile numbers were obtained in fake documents or wrong ways. Cyber thugs used these numbers to trap people in their nets. Most of the frauds like ‘Update the electricity bill’, ‘KYC update’, ‘Lottery Jeeti Hai’ or ‘Police Officers’ were being done with these fake sims. These connections had become a major threat not only for the common people, but also for the security of the country.
The general public gets a big relief
We all are feeling the direct impact of this action of the government. Spoof calls have decreased by 97% and normal fraud SMS by up to 89%. Frauds on platforms like WhatsApp have also seen a huge decline.
You also be careful!
You should also go to the ‘Communication Saathi’ portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in) and check that there is no unknown number in your name. If such a number is seen, then report it immediately and get it blocked. A small precaution of yours can save you from falling prey to a big fraud.
