Speeding turns into the ‘Messenger of Death’ on Jharkhand’s roads: 527 lives lost in 2025, young generation most affected Speeding turns into the ‘Messenger of Death’ on Jharkhand’s roads: 527 lives lost in 2025; the younger generation is the most affected.

The havoc of unbridled speed on the roads of Jharkhand is showing no signs of stopping. The shocking figures revealed recently have shocked the entire state. During the year 2025, 527 people have lost their lives in road accidents. The most worrying thing is that the largest number of these dead are youth between 18 to 30 years. The report released by the administration shows that every day in some corner of the state some family is losing its lamp due to carelessness and fast speed.

A mountain of sorrow fell on the youth

According to the road safety audit report, youth account for about 60 percent of the total deaths. Youth between 18 to 30 years, who are starting their career or dreaming of their bright future, are becoming the main victims of road accidents. Experts believe that stunting without helmet on two-wheelers, drunk driving and ignoring road rules are the biggest causes of deaths in this age group. This figure not only reflects administrative failure, but also creates a major social crisis due to the lack of youth engaged in raising families.

Why are Jharkhand’s highways proving fatal?

Despite identification of black spots (accident prone areas) on major highways of Jharkhand, accidents are not decreasing. Apart from high speed, stray animals roaming on the roads, potholes and poor street lights at night also invite accidents. The report also revealed that the death toll is higher on rural and suburban roads compared to urban areas because medical facilities are not readily available there. Due to not getting treatment within the ‘golden hour’ i.e. one hour of the accident, many injured people die on the road.

Now the administration’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy

Seeing this horrific graph of deaths, the transport department and traffic police have now geared up. In the coming days, a special campaign will be launched across the state, in which strict action will be taken against overspeeding like heavy fines and cancellation of licenses. Police have instructed all district headquarters to put up sign boards at black spots with immediate effect and increase surveillance through CCTV cameras. Along with this, special sessions will be organized in educational institutions to make the youth aware about road safety. To save one’s life on the road, following the rules has now become not an option but a compulsion.
