News India Live, Digital Desk: Indian team vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was badly injured while taking a spectacular catch in the third ODI against Australia. The injury was so severe that scans revealed injury to his spleen and he had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital due to internal bleeding.
This tragic incident happened during the last ODI match of the series played at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday. In the 34th over of the innings, Shreyas Iyer took a brilliant catch of Australian batsman Alex Carey, but in the process he suffered a serious injury to his left lower rib while falling on the ground. He was immediately seen writhing in pain, after which he was taken off the field with the help of medical staff.
Investigation revealed serious injury
When the pain did not subside after leaving the field, he was taken to the hospital. Reports on Monday left everyone worried when scans revealed that Iyer had suffered internal bleeding and a ‘laceration’ (tissue tear) in his spleen. A source told PTI that the injury “could have been fatal”.
BCCI issued official statement
Considering the seriousness of the matter, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia issued an official statement clarifying the situation. “Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury to the left lower rib cage area while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further investigation. Scans revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is undergoing treatment, is medically stable and is recovering,” the statement said.
The statement further said, “The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his injury situation in consultation with experts in Sydney and India. The Indian team doctor will remain with Shreyas in Sydney and evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
Monitoring in ICU, suspense on return
Iyer may be kept under strict observation of doctors in the ICU for two to seven days to prevent the risk of infection due to internal bleeding. Due to this serious injury, there is uncertainty regarding his return to the cricket field. Initially he was expected to be out for three weeks, but now he may take even more time to recover from this injury.
India won this match by 9 wickets due to the brilliant innings of Rohit Sharma (121 not out) and Virat Kohli (74 not out), but this victory paled in front of the news of Shreyas Iyer’s injury.
