Nowadays, UPI payment is prevalent everywhere, from tea shops to shopping malls. It has made our life very easy and has also eliminated the hassle of carrying cash. But there is a big fear associated with this facility – what if even one number is accidentally pressed and the money is transferred to an unknown person?
The biggest question that comes to everyone’s mind is whether money sent to a wrong UPI ID or number can be recovered? We tried to find out the answer to this question from experts.
What do experts say?
Rupi Paisa Director Mukesh Pandey said that this mistake in UPI payment can be rectified. According to him, “It is absolutely possible to get back the money sent to the wrong account, but it entirely depends on how quickly you act.”
Take these steps immediately to get your money back
If you have also made such a mistake, then instead of panicing, immediately follow the steps given below:
- The first and most important task: Without delaying even a second, immediately contact the nearest branch of your bank or its customer care number.
- Provide UPI Transaction ID: When you contact the bank, please tell them the UPI ID of that wrong transaction. You will find this ID in the history of the payment app.
- The bank will request: Upon receiving your complaint, your bank will contact the bank of the person to whose account the money has been transferred by mistake. The bank will request the person to return the money.
What if the other person refuses to return the money?
Honest person: If the other person is honest and ready to return the money, your money will be easily returned to your account.
If he refuses: But, even if the person flatly refuses to return the money, hope is not lost. In such a situation, you can take the matter to the RBI Ombudsman through your bank, who will help you.
Statistics also give hope
According to NPCI, about 12-15% of the total complaints related to UPI in 2024 were about sending money to the wrong account. Most of these cases were resolved because people filed complaints on time without delay.
The best way to avoid mistakes
Always remember, the best way to avoid any kind of trouble is to be careful. Therefore, next time whenever you make UPI payment to someone, check the name and number twice before sending the money.
