New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday gave a strong warning to those who often threaten India’s strategically important ‘Chicken Nek’ Corridor (Siliguri Corridor). Sarma said that Bangladesh has two “chicken necks” of their own which are much weaker than India.

The comment came two months after the statement made during the visit of Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh. Yunus said in March that Bangladesh is the “sea patron” for the northeastern states surrounded by seven lands in India. Yunus also said that this can be an extension of the Chinese economy, where things should be made, produced, brought to the market and transported from China to the rest of the world. Since then, Sarma has been emphasizing the need to remove sensitivity associated with the “Chicken Neck” corridor.

Northeast states of India – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim – 1,596 km with Bangladesh, 1,395 km with China, 1,640 km with Myanmar, 455 km with Bhutan and 97 km with Nepal. These states are linked to the rest of India through only 22 km wide terrain, called the “Chicken Neck” Corridor.

In a post on X (East Twitter) on Sunday, Sarma said, “Those who habitual India threatened to ‘chicken neck corridor’, they should also pay attention to these facts: Bangladesh has their two ‘chicken necks’. Both are more unsafe.”

He further explained, “The first 80 -km northern Bangladesh corridor is – from South Dinajpur to Southwest Garo Hills. Here any disturbance can completely separate the entire Rangpur division from the rest of Bangladesh.”Sarma further said, “The second 28 km Chittagong Corridor, which is from South Tripura to Bengal Bay. This corridor is the only contact between India’s chicken neck, the only contact between Bangladesh’s financial capital and political capital.”He said that they are presenting only geographical facts that some people forget.

According to some reports, China is assisting Bangladesh to revive an airbase of World War II in Lalmonirhat, located about 100 km from the strategically sensitive -sensitive chicken neck corridor.[5] This warning of Sarma has come in this context.

Even before this, Sarma had targeted Bangladesh. In a press conference on 21 May, he said, “We have a chicken neck. But Bangladesh has two chicken neck. If Bangladesh attacks our chicken neck, we will attack both Bangladesh’s chicken neck… connected to Meghalaya which connects the Chittagong port with Bangladesh, it is also located in the Chicken Neck of India.” Sarma also emphasized India’s military strength.
