Russia, Iran, AI and terrorism… MI5 Chief warns of major threats to Britain’s security

Ken McCallum, head of Britain’s intelligence agency MI5, has issued a very serious and warning statement regarding the country’s security system. McCallum, while opening a detailed account of the serious security crises facing the world, has told what major and geopolitical threats are currently looming before Britain’s national security. He made it clear that in today’s era, security challenges are not limited to traditional wars only, but their scope has become quite wide.

Russia becomes ‘number one aggressor’ for western countries

The MI5 chief has described Russia as ‘Aggressor Number One’, the biggest threat to Western countries and Britain. McCallum underlined that instead of openly waging war, Russia is now working on a strategy of covert, sabotage and causing harm through cyber means, so that the situation of breaking out of war with NATO countries can be avoided. Citing the Ukraine conflict, he said that since the conflict, Britain and other western countries have shown the way out of Russian embassies to about 1000 intelligence officers, after which Russia is now making its moves with the help of local volunteers and criminal gangs.

Conspiracies in Britain through Iran and criminal gangs

Apart from Russia, Iran also remains a matter of big and serious concern for Britain. According to the intelligence chief, Iran is using local criminal gangs and syndicates to target its political opponents, Iranian media organizations and particularly Israeli interests on British soil. Over the past year, more than 50 arrests have been made in Britain due to Iran-backed activities. The main targets of these attacks and conspiracies are mainly the Jewish community and Britain’s sensitive military bases, although Iran continues to deny these allegations.

New threat increases from AI and cyber war

Apart from traditional enemies, the unbridled use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has given sleepless nights to security agencies around the world. The MI5 chief has warned that AI has completely supercharged the ongoing cyber war between hackers and security agencies. Attackers are now using sophisticated AI tools to create precise propaganda and misleading content that misleads people. Moreover, the possibility of terrorists developing dangerous bioweapons or new deadly viruses with the help of AI has deeply worried global security experts.

Growing scope of terrorism, racial hatred and fundamentalism

The threat of terrorism in Britain is still not completely over. In April this year, the country’s national terrorism threat level was raised to ‘severe’, meaning the likelihood of future attacks is very high. Organizations like Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS) are still misusing online platforms to radicalize the youth. Along with this, a new and dangerous trend that has come before the security agencies is that anti-immigration and anti-Muslim hatred is now rapidly turning into violent terrorist thinking, which the intelligence agencies are fully prepared to deal with.
