Rahul Gandhi’s charge – not allowed to speak in the House
In the Lok Sabha, the conflict between Speaker Om Birla and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has come out openly. Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was not being given a chance to speak in the House and the House is being operated in a undemocratic manner.
After zero hour on Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that the behavior of the members of the House should be in line with its dignity. He advised Rahul Gandhi to improve conduct, citing Rule 349. After this, the speaker adjourned the proceedings of the House till 2 pm.
Rahul Gandhi’s retaliation
Rahul Gandhi expressed strict objections to the speaker’s remarks and said,
“I did nothing wrong. When I stood up, the speakers got up and left and postponed the proceedings.”
He claimed that whenever he stands to speak, he is not allowed to speak, while the tradition is that the Leader of Opposition is given an opportunity to speak.
Opposition of Congress MPs
After postponing the proceedings of the House, Congress MPs met the speaker and lodged an objection to the decision. Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi said that,
“When Sushma Swaraj ji was the Leader of Opposition, she used to get full respect, but Rahul Gandhi is being deliberately stopped. It is against democracy.”
Lok Sabha Speaker’s Stance
Om Birla said that the proceedings of the House are going on in accordance with the rules and all members should maintain the dignity of the House. However, Congress MPs say that BJP ministers and MPs are given an opportunity to speak immediately, while the opposition is stopped.
Increasing deadlock in parliament
This dispute has come to the fore when there is increasing conflict between the government and the opposition within the Parliament. Congress MPs allege that the government is trying to suppress the voice of the opposition in the House. On the other hand, the BJP says that the opposition is deliberately trying to spoil the atmosphere of the House.
