Sudden potholes during road travel not only disturb the balance of the vehicle but also cause fatal accidents. But now the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a revolutionary step to make the National Highways across the country safe and pothole-free. Now artificial intelligence (AI) will identify broken road surface and illegal encroachment instead of humans. NHAI has started the process of deploying AI-based dashcams and state-of-the-art survey systems across its 40,000 km highway network.
How will NHAI’s ‘AI-Survey’ system work?
The mainstay of this high-tech system is ‘Network Survey Vehicle’ (NSV), which is equipped with 3D laser technology and high-resolution cameras. When these vehicles move on the highway, they will create an accurate digital map of the road surface. The AI will analyze the footage received from these cameras and instantly identify more than 30 different types of road defects.
Survey report will be ready in 10 days
How technically advanced this system is can be gauged from the fact that the survey report which earlier took a long time of 4 to 6 months to prepare, will now be ready in just 10 days. A single NSV vehicle is capable of surveying approximately 300 kilometers of road per day, which will increase the efficiency of NHAI manifold.
Road life and safety will be better
The biggest advantage of this monitoring system is ‘real-time monitoring’. Even minor defects or emerging potholes will be caught by AI, making it possible to carry out timely maintenance. This technology has already been successful in developed countries like America, Britain, China, Japan and Australia. With its implementation in India, not only will the quality and lifespan of roads increase, but there is also expected to be a huge decline in road accidents.
The journey will be pleasant and safe
National Highways are the lifeline of the country’s freight and passenger transport. With AI monitoring, road maintenance will now be data-based, not guess-based. This step will not only make travel easier for passengers, but will also prove to be a major milestone in taking road safety standards to a global level.
