Political stir in Manipur: BJP claims support for 44 MLAs before Governor

The BJP has claimed to form the government in Manipur. BJP leader Thokchom Radheshyam Singh met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Wednesday and claimed to have supported 44 MLAs to form the government. He met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan along with nine MLAs. Radheshyam Singh has said that 44 MLAs are ready to form the government according to the wishes of the public.

In May 2023, BJP leader N. Biren Singh resigned from the post of Chief Minister for his government’s criticism to deal with the ethnic conflict between Metei and Cookie-Zo. After this, President’s rule was implemented in Manipur from February. Currently there are 59 MLAs in the 60 -member assembly, out of which one seat is vacant due to the death of the MLA. The BJP -led coalition has a total of 44 MLAs, including 32 Maetai MLAs, three Manipuri Muslim MLAs and nine Naga MLAs.

Congress has five MLAs and all are Maiti. Apart from this, the remaining 10 MLAs are cookie, out of which seven were won on BJP ticket in the last election, two cookies are from People’s Alliance and are an independent MLA.
