New Delhi: Due to severe heat in most parts of the country, the maximum demand for electricity reached 235.06 GW last Wednesday. Which is the highest demand so far this season. According to industry experts, the main reason for the increase in power demand is extreme heat. As the temperature rises, the use of air conditioners/coolers increases, which also increases power consumption.
According to data from the Ministry of Power, the maximum demand or maximum supply of electricity during the day on Wednesday was recorded at 235.06 GW. This is the highest demand so far in the summer season this year. Earlier, the maximum demand for electricity was up to 243.27 GW in September, 2023.
This season is expected to break records due to extreme heat and heatwaves in some regions, Earlier this month, the power ministry had estimated the power demand to be 235 GW during the day and 225 GW in the evening in May and 240 GW during the day and 235 GW in the evening for June. Apart from this, the power ministry has also estimated that the peak power demand this summer could reach 260 GW.
According to the data, the maximum demand for electricity was 224.18 GW in April, 2024. At that time it was the beginning of summer in different parts of the country. It was 221.82 GW in March, 222.16 GW in February and 223.51 GW in January. The maximum supply this month was 233 GW on May 6 and 233.80 GW on May 21. In May, 2023 it was 221.42 GW. Last week, the maximum supply of electricity reached 229.57 GW on May 18, while on May 15, 16 and 17 it was around 226 GW.
Experts believe that power demand may rise further and surpass the all-time high of 243.27 GW recorded in September, 2023.
The Indian Meteorological Department had predicted in March this year that the country would experience more hot and warm days this year. The El Nino condition is expected to continue at least till May.
