Parliament is undermanned, yet the opposition is in a do-or-die mood: India’s coalition makes a new move for the monsoon session.

New Delhi: Amidst the huge turmoil in the country’s politics and the opposition front, a very important political stir has been witnessed in the national capital. Due to the recent divisions within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal and the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra and the internal resentment of the DMK in Tamil Nadu, the numerical strength of the opposition in Parliament may have become slightly less than before, but the India coalition is preparing to organize more aggressively and strategically than ever before to corner the government. In a high-profile meeting held at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge regarding the upcoming monsoon session, opposition parties have set aside their mutual differences and started finalizing a new and aggressive strategy within the Parliament.

Strategy meeting at Kharge’s residence: Rahul Gandhi and Venugopal took command

An important meeting of the party’s top policy-makers was held under the chairmanship of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to decide the legislative strategy during the monsoon session. In this high-level brainstorming, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress Organization General Secretary K.C. Venugopal was chiefly present. According to reliable sources of the party, in this internal meeting, not only the role of Congress but also the roadmap to keep the unity of the entire opposition alliance intact and ask sharp questions directly to the government on serious burning issues related to the country was discussed in detail. Congress strategists clearly believe that the split in regional parties may have shown some impact on the edge of opposition, but the opposition will not shy away from exerting its full strength on issues of public interest.

Big issue of faith and corruption: Resolve to corner the government on theft of Ram temple offerings

Congress General Secretary K.C. while formally interacting with the media after the conclusion of the meeting. Venugopal revealed the opposition’s biggest agenda to attack the government. He alleged in very strong words that the case of alleged theft of offerings in the Ram temple of Ayodhya is one of the biggest financial corruptions in the country. Venugopal said that this is not just an administrative matter of misappropriation of funds, but a huge attack on the religious faith of crores of Hindus in the country. Holding Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) directly responsible for this alleged scam, he made it clear that the India Alliance will put the government in the dock by raising this issue with full force and noise in both the Houses of Parliament.

DMK’s displeasure and efforts for coordination within the alliance

In the regional politics of Tamil Nadu, there was a serious discussion in the opposition camp about the sourness in the relations between DMK and Congress after the resentment arising out of Congress’s decision to join the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) government. However, a senior national leader of Congress, on the condition of anonymity, said that many top leaders of the India Alliance are constantly maintaining direct communication with the top leadership of DMK. The Congress high command is confident that whatever differences may be there at the local level, the DMK India will never go against the collective decisions of the alliance on the anti-government front within the Parliament at the national level, thereby posing no major threat to the opposition unity.

‘One issue at a time’: A new maze to put constant pressure on the government

In this monsoon session of Parliament, the opposition has learned from its past mistakes and prepared a very mature and well-thought-out parliamentary strategy, which has been named ‘One Time, One Issue’. A senior strategist of the opposition parties said that this time during the session, instead of creating ruckus in the House by raising all the big issues together, they will raise them one by one in a very sequential and systematic manner. The main objective of this new scheme is to raise a new and effective issue every week and demand discussion in the House, so that all-round and continuous political pressure is maintained on the Central Government during the entire monsoon session and the issues of the general public are not allowed to wander on the floor of the Parliament.
