North Korea fired ballistic missile towards South Korea

Once again very scary and stressful news is coming out from the Korean Peninsula of East Asia, which has increased the heartbeats of defense experts and advocates of global peace all over the world. North Korea, the country ruled by dictator Kim Jong Un, has once again shown its old and aggressive nature and fired a powerful ballistic missile in the direction of South Korea’s maritime border and its mainland. There has been a stir from Seoul to Tokyo since this sudden, audacious and provocative missile test. This aggressive step by North Korea is being considered as an act to further inflame the already simmering political and military tension between the two neighboring countries. As soon as this missile was launched by Pyongyang, based on its radar tracking, a high-level emergency alert was immediately issued in the coastal areas and administrative areas of neighboring Japan, so that ordinary citizens could be kept safe from any possible threat. This latest missile test has once again proved that North Korea is continuously expanding its nuclear and missile capabilities, ignoring international sanctions and global warnings, due to which clouds of war are looming over the entire Indo-Pacific region.

According to official information provided by the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the South Korean military, North Korea fired an unknown type of ballistic missile from its interior towards the East Sea (also known as the Sea of Japan). This launch has been done at a time when tension in the Korean Peninsula has reached its peak due to military exercises, launch of spy satellites and political statements in the last few months. The channels of diplomatic communication between the current government of South Korea and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un have been completely closed, and both countries are giving open warnings to each other. This latest missile test by Pyongyang is a clear message that it wants to put psychological pressure on Seoul and its main ally America with the help of its military power. North Korean media and rulers have consistently claimed that their military is fully prepared to respond to any external aggression, and that such missile tests are a part of their defensive preparations. However, defense analysts believe that such persistent and provocative actions are increasing the possibility of any mishap or war in the region, putting the security of the entire Asian continent at risk.

In view of the flight path of this ballistic missile fired by North Korea, the Government of Japan exercised utmost caution and immediately activated the Emergency Alert System in its northern and western provinces. The Japanese Prime Minister’s Office and the Defense Ministry issued advisories to the country’s citizens, advising them to stay in safe places or inside permanent houses, as the missile debris or its possible impact could pose a threat near the Japanese maritime border. Japan Coast Guard and Navy warships are currently on full alert and are conducting operations to search and forensic analysis of the missile parts that fell in the sea. The Tokyo administration has strongly condemned this incident, calling it a flagrant violation of the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Under the trilateral security agreement between Japan, South Korea and the United States, high-level intelligence meetings have started immediately after this latest attack, in which strategies to give a concrete response to this dangerous attitude of North Korea at diplomatic and military level are being considered.

Despite all the stringent sanctions of the United Nations Security Council, economic sanctions and repeated warnings from the global community, North Korea is not backing down from its dictatorial policies. The Kim Jong Un administration continues to fund its nuclear and missile programs while ignoring the deteriorating conditions of its economy and the basic needs of its citizens. Pyongyang believes that only by becoming a nuclear and modern missile state it can protect itself from any possible attack by the US and its Western allies. That is why it is testing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and hypersonic weapons equipped with new technologies year after year. Experts in international politics say that North Korea’s morale has increased further due to the behind-the-scenes diplomatic and technical support it receives from Russia and some other countries. Whenever Western countries are involved in Ukraine or other global issues, North Korea tries to attract the world’s attention by doing such provocative actions. This latest missile attack has once again shown that diplomatic talks and sanctions are no longer having any effect on North Korea, and it is bent on disturbing the balance of power in the region.

After this incident of missile firing towards Seoul, the South Korean armed forces have also been put on full high-alert and military exercises have been intensified to deal with any emergency. South Korea’s presidential office has said in clear words that the country will not compromise its sovereignty and the safety of its citizens in any way, and that if North Korea does not desist from its actions, it will have to face serious consequences. America has also once again reiterated its ‘ironclad commitment’ and said that it will not shy away from using its nuclear umbrella to protect South Korea and Japan. The common citizens of the Korean Peninsula, crushed between all these superpowers, are forced to live under the shadow of a permanent war, because the continuously increasing military aggression from both sides can take the form of a major regional conflict any day. Thus, this latest ballistic missile test by North Korea is not just a military exercise, but it is a huge challenge to global peace, to overcome which the international community will have to take some strong and effective steps soon.
