News India Live, Digital Desk: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has strongly objected to the use of the word ‘Brahmin’ for Indians by a top US official. He has described Indians who defend this language as “friends of imperialists” and appealed to dismiss such mentality outright.
What is the whole matter?
The controversy began with a statement by former US President Donald Trump’s business advisor, Peter Navaro. Navaro alleged that the benefit of “Brahmins” was benefiting “Brahmins” by India during the Ukraine struggle. After his statement, there was a sharp response in India and it was seen as an attack on casteist and India’s social fabric.
Finance Minister erupted on the argument of ‘Boston Brahmins’
Following Navaro’s statement, some leaders and analysts in India argued that Navaro was not mean by ‘Brahmin’ with the Indian caste system, but the American saying ‘Boston Brahmins’. The word is used for old rich and elite families in America, leaders like Trinamool Congress leader Sagarika Ghosh and Saket Gokhale gave the same explanation.
However, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman dismissed this explanation outright. He said in an interview, “This is a form of the policy of the British ‘divide and rule’, which was used by the imperialists here.”
He said in an angry tone, “Today, friends of the imperialists are telling us that ‘Boston Brahmins’ means that it does not. Who is careful? Sorry, forgive, but who is careful? I want Indians to think for themselves.”
Appeal for self -esteem
Sitharaman appealed to Indians who defended such a language to awaken a sense of self -respect. He said, “I want to tell those Indians who are now defending the language that they get up and say, ‘We are now independent of all of you for more than 75-80 years. We will see our work ourselves, we will take care of ourselves. Avoid using these words’.”
The Finance Minister believes that it is one thing to use such derogatory language by foreign authorities, but when Indians themselves try to justify that language, it is more tragic and derogatory. He clearly said that Indians do not need any cleanliness that justifies the colonial mindset.
