Wellington, 29 December: New Zealand cricket has suffered a big blow. The team’s experienced all-rounder Doug Bracewell has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. 35-year-old Bracewell last played a Test match for New Zealand in the year 2023. Bracewell, who has been struggling with a serious rib injury, has also been out of action for Central Districts this season, due to which he took this difficult decision.
Doug Bracewell played 28 Tests, 21 ODIs and 20 T20 International matches in his international career between 2011 and 2023. The most memorable moment of his career came in the Hobart Test against Australia in December 2011, which was only his third Test match. In this match, Bracewell recorded brilliant figures of 60 runs for 9 wickets and helped New Zealand win the Test in Australia after 26 years. This is also New Zealand’s last Test win in Australia to date.
Bracewell, a fast-medium pace bowler, took 74 wickets in 28 matches in Test cricket, while he took a total of 46 wickets in limited overs cricket. Announcing his retirement, Bracewell said that cricket had been a proud part of his life and it was a privilege to get the opportunity to play for his country and home team.
Doug Bracewell comes from a distinguished cricket family. His father Brendon and uncle John Bracewell have played Test cricket for New Zealand, while John Bracewell has also been the coach of the national team several times. His other uncles, Douglas and Mark, have also played first-class cricket. Bracewell played two ODIs and one Test match alongside his cousin Michael Bracewell, who will captain the New Zealand ODI team on the upcoming tour of India.
Apart from Central Districts in domestic cricket, Bracewell represented Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in IPL 2012, Joburg Super Kings in SA20 2024 and Central Stags in the Global Super League this year.
Doug Bracewell is ending his career with a special accomplishment. He scored more than 4000 runs and took more than 400 wickets in New Zealand first-class cricket. In 137 first class matches, he took 437 wickets and scored 4505 runs, which also included three centuries. This record of his includes him in the list of memorable all-rounders of New Zealand cricket.
