A heart-wrenching incident has come to light on Saturday from a private homestay located in Garal, on the quiet outskirts of Assam’s capital Guwahati, which has shocked the entire city. Nimisha Thakuria, a 22-year-old promising student of the Department of Sociology at Guwahati University, died under suspicious and mysterious circumstances. At the time of the incident, the student was staying in room number 10 of the homestay with her 26-year-old boyfriend Asif Ali. As soon as the information about the incident was received, the local police took immediate action and detained the accused Asif Ali and formally arrested him after interrogation.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the police are not considering it as just an ordinary unnatural death, but are prima facie investigating it from the angle of suspicion of murder. However, the arrested accused Asif Ali is continuously claiming during police interrogation that the student has committed suicide. Police officials say that there are huge contradictions in the statements of the accused and the physical evidence found from the spot does not match his claims. This tragic incident has not only sent a wave of mourning in the educational corridors, but has also raised many serious questions regarding security and law and order in the city.
The most sensational and shocking aspect of this entire case is the last phone call made by the student to her mother. Gautam Das, a family friend of the victim, while giving details of the incident to the media, said that Nimisha had left her house at around 5 pm on Friday evening saying that she was going to her female friend’s house. By 10 pm, she assured the family over the phone that she was safe and would stay at her friend’s house for the night, so the family was rest assured.
But at around 2 o’clock in the night the family’s phone rang, which shook them to the ground. From the other side Nimisha was crying badly and screaming in a very nervous voice. Crying, he said again and again that mother, they will kill me. Before the family could ask him anything else or understand his location, there was a sound of a scuffle and someone snatching the phone from behind the phone and suddenly the call got disconnected. After this, when contacted again the phone started switching off. The distraught family members immediately reached Azara police station and requested the police for help.
The homestay’s cook and caretaker Bipul Bailung has described the horrific scene of the night of the incident. According to the caretaker, after midnight suddenly the sounds of a young man shouting and crying loudly started coming from the direction of the room. He was continuously saying, Dada, get up, get up. When the homestay staff ran towards room number 10, the scene there was very disturbing. Inside the room, Nimisha was lying on the floor in an unconscious state and Asif Ali was sitting holding her body.
The staff revealed that both of them had already come to this homestay and had booked room number 10 on the same afternoon. The unconscious student was immediately taken to the local health center in nearby Dharapur. Seeing the deteriorating condition of the student, the doctors immediately referred her to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). When the family and police reached the hospital, the doctors there declared 22-year-old Nimisha dead after examination.
Guwahati West Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bolin Deori, while officially confirming the case, said that the initial information was received from the health center in Dharapur. DCP Deori clearly said that accused Asif Ali is claiming that the student has committed suicide, but the police does not believe his statement at all. No external blood marks were found at the scene of the incident or on the body of the deceased, due to which the possibility of hanging or murder in any other way cannot be ruled out.
The police forensic team has sealed the homestay room and seized fingerprints, mobile phones of both and other personal items from there. According to police officials, until the detailed postmortem report and viscera report are released, the final conclusion about the exact cause of death cannot be drawn. Apart from this, the police is also conducting a thorough digital forensic investigation of the call detail records (CDR) and social media chats of both of them to find out what dispute took place between them before the incident.
Due to the deceased being from the Hindu community and the arrested accused Asif Ali being from another community, this incident spread huge social tension in many areas of the city as soon as it came to light. Some local civic organizations and student organizations took to the streets and started protesting. The protesters termed it a serious criminal conspiracy and demanded a speedy and impartial investigation into the case and death sentence to the culprit.
Seeing the increasing tension and jam situation on the road, senior police officers reached the spot and talked to the protesters. The police administration assured the agitators that the strictest action is being taken in the case under the law without any bias and strong evidence is being collected against the accused. The administration has appealed to maintain peace and harmony in the city, while the police force is continuously patrolling the sensitive areas and keeping an eye on the situation.
