Mehul Choksi arrested in Belgium after India’s extradition request

New Delhi: Belgian police arrested billionaire diamond merchant Mehul Choksi on Sunday after India’s extradition request.

With Punjab National Bank Rs. Mehul Choksi, who cheated Rs 13,500 crore, was absconding since 2018. He had run away from India since 2018 and was living in Antigua, from where he reached Amsterdam, the headquarters of the diamond industry.

Earlier, his nephew Nirav Modi was arrested on Saturday in a fraud case and the CBI and ED requested the Belgian government for his extradition, which was accepted.

He settled in Antigua since 2018, but reached Belgium for ‘medical treatment’.

When Indian officials received strong information that Mehul was in Belgium, the Belgian government first arrested him and then decided to extradite India after India requested the Belgian government to arrest him.

Observers say that papers have been prepared to complete the process of handing Mehul to India, but Mehul can also ask for bail by making an excuse for health and can also get treatment in Belgium.

Interpol issued a red corner notice against Choksi, but now the notice has been canceled as it will be handed over to the Indian security agencies.
