In Sanatan Dharma, the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha, which comes every month, is considered very special and sacred for the worship of Devadhidev Mahadev Lord Shiva, which is celebrated with full devotion as Monthly Shivratri. This date, which comes every month of the year, has its own spiritual and astrological significance, because by observing a fast on this day and worshiping with rituals, all the troubles of the devotees’ life go away. This time, many questions are running in the minds of people regarding the correct date of monthly Shivratri in October 2026, Panchang calculation, Nishita Muhurta and the rules related to it. In particular, it is very important to know whether any kind of Shraddha ritual can be performed on this particular date as per the rules of the Panchang or not. Let us know the exact date, auspicious time, time of night worship and all the important religious rules related to the monthly Shivratri of October 2026.
According to the Vedic calendar, the festival of monthly Shivaratri will be celebrated this time on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. According to the Gregorian calendar, this holy date is falling on Thursday, October 8 in October 2026. In the Hindu calendar, dates are calculated on the basis of sunrise and position of the moon, due to which sometimes confusion arises regarding the dates of fasts and festivals. This time Chaturdashi Tithi is going to start on the night of 8th October at around 10:15 pm and it will end the next day i.e. on 9th October at around 9:35 pm. Since the monthly Shivratri fast and its main puja is always observed during Pradosh Kaal and midnight i.e. Nishita Kaal, hence on the basis of Udayatithi and Ratri Vyappini Chaturdashi, the main fast and night vigil will be observed on 8th October 2026 only. The coincidence of this day is considered very special for Shiva devotees because on this day there is also a wonderful possibility of Guru Pradosh Vrat.
For the worship of Lord Shiva, the night time on monthly Shivratri is said to have special significance. According to religious beliefs, at this time Mahadev appeared in the form of Linga and made the universe realize his divinity. On this monthly Shivratri falling on October 8, 2026, the auspicious time of main ‘Nishita Kaal’ will start from 11:44 pm and will last till 12:33 am. This is the period of about 49 minutes in which the worship done to Mahadev gives thousand times more results. Apart from this, a special time has also been fixed for the Shiva devotees who want to stay awake the whole night and worship Lord Bholenath during the four prahars. The puja of the first Prahar will start in the evening, the second Prahar will be around midnight, and so on in four Prahars, Rudrabhishek, recitation of Shiva Chalisa, and chanting of ‘Om Namah Shivay’ Mahamantra. This all-night sadhana provides mental peace and spiritual energy to the devotees.
Since the month of October is going on and in these days the concluding stages of Pitru Paksha are also going on, the question that comes in the mind of many people is whether Shraddha or Pind Daan of ancestors can be performed on the day of Chaturdashi. According to the ancient texts and scriptural rules of Hindu religion, Chaturdashi Tithi is considered completely prohibited for Shraddha rituals. Clear instructions have been given in the scriptures that on Chaturdashi Tithi, Shraddha is performed only for those ancestors who died due to some accident, unnatural death, violence, poison or weapon injury i.e. Apmratyu. It is called ‘Chaturdashi’s Shraddha’ or ‘Ghat Chaturdashi’, in which it is prohibited to perform Shraddha for common people. Shraddha of common ancestors is performed on other dates of Paksha like Sarva Pitru Amavasya or Dashami-Ekadashi. Therefore, on the monthly Shivratri and Chaturdashi days, only Lord Shiva’s Sadhana, Rudrabhishek and fasting is done, so that any kind of defect can be avoided.
Monthly Shivratri fast is considered very strict and disciplined, which both men and women observe according to their devotion. On this day, after waking up early in the morning and taking bath, one wears clean clothes and vows to fast by going to the home temple or any Shiva temple. While fasting the whole day, Bholenath is remembered in the mind. During Pradosh Kaal or night time, Shivalinga is anointed with Ganga water, milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar i.e. Panchamrit. Offering Belpatra, Dhatura, Datika flowers, white sandalwood and ashes to Mahadev is considered very dear. People who regularly observe monthly Shivratri fast every month, problems like marital obstacles, fear, disease and debt are eliminated from their lives forever. This time, by fasting on this Shivratri falling in October, the seeker gets the blessings of special spiritual progress and attainment of Shiva Lok.
