News India Live, Digital Desk: West Bengal Politics: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday paid homage to the great social reformer and educationist Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar on his 134th death anniversary. On this occasion, he also targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP and alleged that the ruling party at the Center is attacking Bengali language and culture in West Bengal.
The Chief Minister said that “today, pay tribute to the person who fought throughout his life to remove social evils and promote women’s education.” Recalling the contribution of Vidyasagar, he highlighted his invaluable works in modern Bengal and India’s socio-educational development. Vidyasagar is remembered as a social reformer who made tireless efforts to legalize widow remarriage and prevent child marriage.
Mamta Banerjee, linking Vidyasagar’s legacy with the policies of her government, said that her government is following the path shown by Vidyasagar and working in the field of women empowerment and education. Moving forward, he accused the BJP of “attacking Bengali language” and trying to weaken the rich culture and heritage of the state. Although he did not directly mention any particular incident or comment in his statement, his allegation has been part of his long political struggle with the BJP.
For some time, the Trinamool Congress TMC has been continuously accusing the BJP of being ‘external’ and not understanding or disrespecting Bengali culture. The issue of language and regional identity has become an important aspect in Bengal politics, especially during elections. TMC often presents itself as the patron of Bengali identity and culture, while the BJP tries to show the BJP as a party outside the state. It is clear from such rhetoric that Bengali language, culture and heritage will always remain a sensitive and important issue in West Bengal politics.
