Job of ₹ 2500… Chowka-utensil in 4 houses and now direct minister in Bengal government! Your eyes will fill with tears after listening to this story of Kalita Majhi.

Kolkata, State Bureau. At present, a story is being discussed the most in the politics of West Bengal, which seems like a film script, but it is 100 percent reality. In the first cabinet expansion after the formation of the new government in Bengal, a face has got a place, whose entire life has gone through struggle and tough tests. Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari has surprised everyone by including 32-year-old Kalita Majhi, who became MLA from Ausgram assembly seat of Purba Bardhaman district, in his cabinet. Kalita, who till yesterday used to cook in other people’s homes, has today become an honorable minister.

When I had to leave my studies to earn my living, it was a journey of struggle.

Kalita Majhi’s life was spent in poverty since childhood. Born in a very ordinary family, Kalita has seven sisters and one brother. The father was a daily wage laborer whose meager earnings made it impossible to feed such a large family. The impact of financial constraints was such that Kalita had to leave her studies midway. To help the family, he started working in others’ homes. She used to do cooking and cleaning work in four different houses to earn around Rs 2500 every month. Her husband is also a plumber by profession and her son studies in eighth grade. According to the election affidavit, the total accumulated capital of this new minister is only Rs 1.61 lakh.

Took 45 days leave for election campaign, had a direct heart-to-heart relationship with the public

The political passion within Kalita never diminished. When the party expressed confidence in her, she took leave of about one and a half months from the houses where she worked, to campaign for the elections. After this their real ground struggle began. Without any fanfare, Kalita went from door to door on foot and met people. She shared the happiness and sorrows of the people not like VIP leaders, but like a common woman. The public also liked this ‘domestic help’ among them so much that they took her for granted.

From a small booth level worker straight to the cabinet minister’s chair

This journey of Kalita Majhi has not been decided overnight. She has been associated with BJP for the last 10 years and learned the ropes of politics as a humble booth level worker. Considering his loyalty and hard work, the party had also given him ticket in the 2021 assembly elections. In that wave, Kalita got about 41 percent votes, but she could not taste victory. Even after the defeat, Kalita did not get disheartened and remained firm in the field. The result was that the party fielded him again in the 2026 elections and this time he registered a historic victory from Ausgram seat by a huge margin of 12,535 votes.

BJP’s grassroots strategy and new example of social change

In political circles, the appointment of Kalita Majhi as a minister is being considered a major part of BJP’s ‘grassroots leadership’ strategy. The party is now giving preference to those faces who are connected to the ground and who come directly from among the public instead of air-conditioned rooms. BJP National General Secretary BL Santosh also congratulated him on his incredible success. He clearly said that the party only recognizes talent and hard work, no matter what background the person comes from. This journey of Kalita Majhi is not just about getting a political post, but is the biggest proof of the strength of the common man in the democratic structure of the country.
