India has warned China in very strong words that it should stop deliberately targeting and arbitrarily detaining Indian citizens. Additionally, the government has also issued a travel advisory for its citizens, stating that anyone traveling to China or transiting through there to any other country should take extra precautions.
India’s tough stance comes after a woman from Arunachal Pradesh was mistreated and detained for 18 hours at Shanghai airport last month.
After all, what is the whole matter?
Prema Wangjom Thongdok, a resident of Arunachal Pradesh, was going from London to Japan on 21 November. His flight had a three-hour stopover at Shanghai Airport. But what the Chinese immigration officials did to them here was shocking.
Prema has alleged that the Chinese authorities refused to accept her Indian passport. His argument was that since Prema’s birthplace is Arunachal Pradesh, she is a part of China. On the basis of this absurd claim, they illegally detained Prema for 18 hours and mentally harassed her.
India gave a blunt reply to China
After this shameful incident, India raised this matter strongly with China and has now publicly issued a strong warning. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clearly said:
“We seek assurance from China that Indian citizens passing through any Chinese airport in future will not be deliberately targeted, arbitrarily detained or harassed. China will have to respect the rules related to international air travel.”
India has called this action of China a violation not only of international rules, but also of China’s own rules which allow citizens of any country to transit without visa for 24 hours.
With this, India has once again made it clear to the whole world that Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral and unbreakable part of India.
