According to people with knowledge of the matter, the Income Tax Department has issued notices to many taxpayers who have claimed wrong refunds. The department has expressed concern over the increasing number of suspicious tax returns and refund claims, especially from unscrupulous individuals, the people said.
The department has targeted chartered accountants and agencies that promise huge refunds, often using fraudulent practices, the people told NDTV Profit. He also said that many refund claims involve fraudulent expenses, disability and medical claims.
Taxpayers from across the country are involved
People said that these notices have been issued for frauds involving taxpayers across the country in 2021-22 and 2022-23. People said the Income Tax Department is keeping a close watch on large tax refund claims after major cases were reported in cities like Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
