Post

News India Live, Digital Desk: Nowadays a name is echoing a lot in New York City politics – Johran Mamdani. Johar of Indian origin, who is a Democratic Party candidate for the post of Mayor of New York, has given a statement that has created a stir in not only America but also the world around the world. He has said that if he was elected mayor and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stepped into New York, he will arrest him.

This statement may sound shocking, but the reason behind this is also very serious. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu on charges of war crimes in Gaza, although the US does not accept the jurisdiction of the ICC, but Mamdani says that he will respect international law as mayor.

Who is Johran Mamdani?

The story of 33 -year -old Johran Mamdani is also quite interesting. He was born in Kampala, Uganda. His father Mahmood Mamdani is a well-known professor and his mother Meera Nair is a world famous filmmaker who is known for films like ‘Salam Bombay’ and ‘Monsoon Wedding’. Johran came to New York with his family at the age of 7 and grew up here.

Before joining politics, Mammadani worked as a housing counselor, where they helped people to protect them from being evicted from their homes. He has also been a hip-hop musician. His politics is considered to be of ‘Democratic Socialist’ ideology, which is inspired by leaders like Berney Sanders.

Why did this big statement?

Mammadani says that when the federal leadership of the country failed to take the right steps, cities and states will have to come forward and stand for their values. He made serious allegations in Gaza on Netanyahu, saying that they could not allow a person to roam in New York, which the international court had accused of war crime.[2] He also made it clear that this rule will apply not only to Netanyahu, but also to Russian President Vladimir Putin, against whom ICC is a warrant.

Is this really possible?

Legal experts believe that it is almost impossible to do so and it can also be against the American federal law. Because America is not a member of the ICC, its warrants do not apply here. This statement is also being seen as a political stunt.

However, this statement of Mamdani has made her a strong voice in America’s progressive politics. On the one hand, while people like former President Donald Trump are criticizing him, on the other hand his supporters are calling it the politics of the principles. It will be interesting to see what this statement impacts his election future, but one thing is certain that Johran Mamdani has made the battle of New York’s Mayor international.
