The highlight of this year’s Dahi Handi competition held at Morabadi ground was the thrilling moment when a tough competition started between the Gobinda groups from different parts of Jharkhand to break the pot filled with butter hanging several feet high in the air. To reach this pot, which was tied at a height of several feet from the ground, the youth climbed on each other’s shoulders and started making human towers (pyramids), seeing which the breath of every spectator present in the ground stopped for a few moments. Amidst tight security arrangements, when Govinda of one team, after continuously falling and recovering, finally successfully broke the pot with complete agility and balance, the entire Morhabadi ground echoed with thunderous applause and whistles. To watch this exciting and closely fought match, thousands of common citizens, women and children from every corner of Ranchi city reached the field with their families, who openly enjoyed this traditional game. The winning team was honored by the chief guest Chief Minister Hemant Soren with huge cash prizes and traditional souvenirs, after which the youth celebrated the victory by applying colors to each other and dancing and singing.
Ranchi district administration, police force and organizing committee had geared up months in advance to conduct this mass festival organized on such a large scale in a peaceful, orderly and safe manner.
