Dhaka, 28 November (HS). A hearing was held in the High Court today on the situation arising out of the murder of a lawyer in the violence in Chittagong after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of Sanatan Jagran Manch in Bangladesh and leader of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Meanwhile, while rejecting the petition to ban ISKCON, the High Court said that the government will definitely look into it.

This petition was filed by lawyer Moniruzzaman on Wednesday. It demanded a ban on ISKCON and imposition of emergency measures in Chittagong and Rangpur to avoid any untoward situation. Considering the sensitivity of the matter, the High Court summoned the Attorney General. During the hearing today, lawyer Moniruzzaman said that now the time has come to ban ISKCON. To this the High Court replied that the government will definitely look into it.

Earlier, Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haq and Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Asaduddin informed the High Court bench of Justice Farah Mehboob and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury about the government’s stand. The State has taken a strong stance against any attempts to create unrest or anarchy in the wake of the arrest of a former ISKCON leader centered on the murder of a lawyer in Chittagong, the High Court was told. This matter is on the top priority of the government. Three cases have been registered in connection with the incident and 33 people have been arrested. Law enforcement agencies are working to prevent any unrest arising from this issue.

After this, Attorney General MD Asaduzzaman said that some parties may try to destabilize the country in many ways. He said the government has initiated discussions with political parties regarding recent issues promoting national unity. The High Court emphasized that no one should be allowed to spoil law and order.
