News India Live, Digital Desk: In North India, the heat has started showing like May-June in the month of April itself. The heat of the sun is now proving fatal in entire North India including Delhi-NCR. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that the mercury may reach close to 42 to 45 degrees Celsius in many parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh in the next 48 hours. As soon as snowfall stops in the mountains, the danger of ‘heat-stress’ and ‘Loo’ has started looming in the plains.
Shadow of first ‘heatwave’ of the season in Delhi
The heat in the capital Delhi has put the records of the last several years in danger. According to Safdarjung Observatory, the temperature is 5 degrees above normal. The Meteorological Department has issued ‘Yellow Alert’ for Delhi-NCR. The sky will remain clear for the next three to four days and heat waves along with strong sunlight will trouble people. Stepping out of the house between 12 noon and 4 pm will be no less than a challenge.
Effect of ‘heat dome’ in UP-Bihar and Rajasthan
Due to the ‘heat dome’ being formed in the plains, the mercury is reaching near 46 degrees in Kota and Churu of Rajasthan. At the same time, heat wave has started wreaking havoc in Prayagraj, Varanasi and Jhansi of Uttar Pradesh. The temperature in Patna and Gaya of Bihar has also crossed 43 degrees. Dry westerly winds have reduced the moisture in the atmosphere, causing both humidity and heat.
Number of patients increased in hospitals, administration tightened its belt
Due to the extreme heat, the number of patients suffering from heat stroke, dehydration and high fever in hospitals has increased by 30%. Special ‘Heat Units’ have been activated in major hospitals of Delhi. The administration has advised people to drink as much water as possible and wear light colored cotton clothes. In many states, steps like keeping traffic signals closed during the afternoon and banning construction works are being taken.
When will we get relief? Know the forecast of weather department
Meteorologists say that due to the absence of any active Western Disturbance at present, this heat wave will continue. However, a weak disturbance is likely to become active around April 25, causing partly cloudy sky and light drizzle over Delhi and surrounding areas. But at present, there is no hope of respite from the scorching heat for the next 4 days.
Important precautions to avoid heat:
Stay hydrated: Keep drinking water, ORS or lemonade at regular intervals even if you do not feel thirsty.
Avoid sunlight: Avoid outdoor activities between 1 pm and 4 pm.
Keep your head covered: Use an umbrella, hat or towel while going out.
Food and drink: Eat fresh fruits and light food, avoid stale food.
