In the foothills of the dense forests of the religious city Haridwar and the adjacent Rajaji National Park, there are many such mythological and mysterious places, which are directly related to the supernatural form of Devadhidev Mahadev. One of these very popular and mysterious beliefs is related to that ancient banyan tree and the corner of the forest, where it is believed that Lord Shiva’s beloved members, ghosts and invisible powers still reside. Local people and saints consider this place not just a religious place but a center of direct divine energy.
Shiva’s procession and the camp of ghosts in the dense forests
According to mythology and Shiva Mahapuran, when Lord Shiva was going towards Kankhal (Haridwar) to marry Mother Sati, apart from the Gods and Goddesses, he was accompanied by his entire procession of beloved Ganas, ghosts, ghosts, vampires and Dakinis and Shakinis.
It is said that before entering the palace of King Daksh in Kankhal, Lord Shiva along with his Ganas and marriage procession rested under the shade of a giant tree amidst the forests. When King Daksha and the people present there saw this terrible and strange Gana form of Shiva, they were frightened. It is believed that at that resting place, Lord Shiva had given a boon to his followers to protect that forest area forever and reside there.
Kankhal and the mysterious banyan tree of Bhootnath Dham
A very ancient tree is present in the Daksheshwar Mahadev temple located in the Kankhal area of Haridwar and the ‘Bhootnath’ area located on the Swargashram-Jungle border. This tree is said to be several hundred years old, whose huge roots extend from the ground to the sky.
According to local beliefs, after sunset a strange energy and peace is felt in this densely forested area. It is believed that Lord Shiva still resides in a subtle form in the branches of this tree and the surrounding nature. This is the reason why local people avoid going to this area without any reason after the evening and worship here is done only with full devotion and pure heart.
Siddha Sadhna place for Sadhus, Saints and Tantriks
This wild and secluded area of Haridwar has been a center of secret meditation for Aghoris, Tantriks and high level seekers for centuries. Lord Shiva has been called ‘Bhootnath’ i.e. the lord of ghosts and spirits.
Devotees believe that by sitting under this sacred tree and chanting Mahamrityunjaya Mantra or Shiva Panchakshar Mantra, a person gets instant freedom from fear, fear of untimely death and negative energies. The same energy which frightens the common man, acts as the ultimate protective shield for the devotees of Shiva.
Direct connection with Daksheshwar Mahadev and Sati’s Yagya Kund.
The history of this mysterious place is also integrally linked to the historical Yagya of King Daksh, where Goddess Sati immolated herself in the Yagya Kund after her father insulted Mahadev. After this, on the orders of Lord Shiva, Veerbhadra and his followers destroyed Daksh’s yagya.
According to historians and devotees, this entire area of Haridwar is not only a pilgrimage of faith, but the greenery, mountains and ancient trees here are living witnesses of the story of the great destruction and rebirth of Shiva and Shakti.
