Government decides to export 10,000 tonnes more onions to UAE

Mumbai: National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) India has given permission to export 10,000 tonnes more onions to the United Arab Emirates. Last month, permission was given to export 14400 tonnes of onion.

As per the notification of the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), these exports beyond the quota have been allowed on March 1, 2024.

An indefinite ban has been imposed on the export of onions from the country, but on the request of the government of any country, the Indian government supplies onions to them.

In view of the high prices in some cities of the country, the government has extended the ban on export of onion indefinitely. This decision has come in view of the Lok Sabha elections.

India is the largest exporter of onion. Sources in the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) had said two weeks ago that the ban on onion exports, which was till March 31, has been extended indefinitely.

Traders were hopeful that the export ban would be lifted as onion prices fell overall. In the last financial year, India had exported 25 lakh tonnes of onion.

Nashik district of Maharashtra produces the highest quantity of onion in the country. Some countries including Bangladesh, UAE, Nepal, Malaysia depend on India for their onion requirement.

India's competitors in the onion export market are China and Egypt. More than 50 percent of onion is imported from Asian countries from India.
