The Aam Aadmi Party government of Delhi has given a big gift to the economically weaker sections of the capital. Now ration card holding families of Delhi will get two LPG cylinders absolutely free every year on the occasion of Holi and Diwali. This ambitious plan has been approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, for which a budget of Rs 300 crore has also been allocated. This step of the government is being considered as a milestone towards fulfilling the election promises.

First installment will be received in March, festival gift to lakhs of families

This scheme will be launched just before the festival of Holi in March this year. The money for the first free cylinder will be sent to the beneficiaries’ account before Holi, while the second installment will be received on Diwali. At present the price of 14.2 kg domestic gas cylinder is around Rs 850. This amount will be transferred directly to the bank account of the female head of the beneficiary family. This decision of the government will provide great relief to lakhs of families from the worry of rising prices of LPG during festivals.

Who will get the benefit? Know what are the conditions

This scheme is exclusively for ration card holders registered in the ‘Poor’ category under the Public Distribution System (PDS) of Delhi. There will be no need to fill any new form to avail the benefits of this scheme. The government will identify eligible families from its existing database. If your ration card is valid and you are included in the economically weaker section in the records of Delhi Government, then you will automatically get the benefit of this scheme. The government has clarified that the purpose of this help is to provide relief only to the genuine needy.

Not cylinder, money will come directly into account through DBT

The most important thing about this scheme is that the government will not distribute cylinders door-to-door. Instead, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) technology will be used. The entire amount of the cylinder will be sent directly to your Aadhaar linked bank account, from which you can buy the cylinder at your convenience from any nearby gas agency. This method will bring transparency in the entire process and eliminate any scope for corruption.

Strict instructions to departments, work started

As soon as the cabinet approval is received, strict instructions have been issued to the concerned departments to implement this scheme. The work of preparing the final list of beneficiaries, their verification and setting the deadline for fund transfer is going on at a fast pace. All preparations will be completed before Holi so that no beneficiary faces any problem.

This initiative of the government will not only reduce the burden of poor families during festivals, but will also make the lives of women easier. This decision is going to bring smile on the faces of lakhs of families of Delhi.
