As soon as the Lok Sabha elections are over, the burden of inflation has started falling heavily on the pockets of the common people. The sharp increase in the prices of petrol and diesel continues in the country. In just the last 12 days, petrol and diesel have become costlier by about Rs 8 per litre. Due to this surge, the price of petrol has crossed the ₹ 100 per liter mark in almost all the states of the country, while in many states diesel has also crossed the century (crossing ₹ 100).
Let us tell you that oil prices in the country were stable since March 2024 and just before the elections, the government had cut petrol and diesel by ₹ 2 per liter. But now in the month of May 2026, the public is facing back-to-back inflation shocks.

Why are the prices of petrol and diesel increasing suddenly?
Due to the ongoing Iran War at the global level, crude oil prices are skyrocketing in the international market. Due to this, Indian government oil companies (Indian Oil, BPCL, HPCL) were facing huge losses.
Loss of ₹30,000 crore: According to Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Petroleum Ministry, due to not increasing the prices in India despite the high prices of crude oil in the international market, oil companies were incurring huge losses of about ₹ 30,000 crore every month on the sale of petrol, diesel and LPG. To compensate for this loss, prices are now being continuously increased.
This is how the government had stopped the prices before the elections.
In order to keep prices stable and provide relief to the public before the Lok Sabha elections, the Central Government has reduced the levy on petrol and diesel. Huge reduction of ₹ 10-10 per liter in Special Excise Duty (Central Excise Duty) Did.
-
Duty on Petrol: It was reduced from ₹13 to ₹3 per litre. (Total excise duty was reduced from ₹21.90 to ₹11.90).
-
Duty on Diesel: It was reduced from ₹10 to zero (0). (The total excise duty was reduced from ₹17.8 to ₹7.8 per litre).
Due to this cut, the prices of petrol and diesel had not increased in the country for the last several months, but due to international pressure and losses of the companies, now the prices are increasing rapidly.
