Former Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi, who was an accused in this high-profile case, has now got bail from the Supreme Court, which has given him a big relief after almost two years of detention. This decision has once again brought this much discussed case into the limelight.

What is Ranchi’s Army Land Fraud Case?

This case is related to the alleged fraudulent purchase and sale of disputed land occupied by the Army in Ranchi. In this case, the nexus between government officials and land mafia was exposed on a large scale.

  • Allegation of fraud: The allegation was that Army land was sold to private hands by falsifying government documents, leading to a scam worth crores of rupees.
  • Arrest of former Deputy Commissioner: During the investigation of this case, serious allegations were also made against the then or former Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi and he was arrested and sent to jail. He was accused of falsifying documents and complicity in this fraud.
  • ED action: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) was also active in this case and had conducted several raids, in which property and fake documents worth crores of rupees were seized.

Why is the bail granted by the Supreme Court important?

Grant of bail does not mean that the person has been proven innocent, but it means that the court has allowed him to stay out of jail for the time being, considering all the aspects of the case and the time spent in custody.

  • Two years’ detention: The former Deputy Commissioner was in jail for almost two years, and the Supreme Court has probably granted him bail considering this period.
  • Long process of case: The investigation and trial process in such corruption cases is often very lengthy, and prolonged imprisonment, even when the case is sub-judice, is a complex part of the judicial process.

After this bail, it will be interesting to see in which direction the further legal proceedings in the Army Land Fraud case go. The public is also keeping a close eye on this matter related to corruption and abuse of power.
