News India Live, Digital Desk: Durgapur Rape case: Politics has heated up over a tragic rape case that took place recently in Durgapur, West Bengal. The BJP has made serious allegations against state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying that the Chief Minister is “lying” about the incident and trying to “cover it up”. BJP has also alleged that Mamata Banerjee is trying to blame the victim, which is called ‘Victim Blaming’ in English.
Actually, this whole controversy started regarding the timeline of the incident. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier said in a statement that the minor victim was rescued by the police “at 12:30 midnight” or a complaint was lodged. BJP has raised objection on this very thing. Amit Malviya, head of BJP’s IT cell and in-charge of West Bengal, has termed Mamata Banerjee’s statement as a complete “lie”.
Malviya has said that Mamata Banerjee is lying and trying to hide the truth, and what is more, she is also insulting the victim’s family. He says that “the neighbor has also given a statement contrary to the CM regarding this time.” Citing an FIR copy, Amit Malviya said that the victim’s family had lodged their complaint with the police at 7:45 pm. He asserted that the 12:30 am incident was a deliberate “lie” spread by the Chief Minister so that he could downplay a “heinous rape of a minor or blame the victim” as to why she was out so late at night.
BJP is continuously demanding a CBI investigation in this matter. BJP leaders say that they do not trust the state police at all, because according to them, local TMC (Trinamool Congress) leaders have a lot of influence on the police and they can try to suppress the matter. This incident in Durgapur reportedly came to light on April 24, when a minor girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped. The police had also arrested two accused in the case.
These allegations against Mamata Banerjee and her party on this sensitive issue are further intensifying the already heated political atmosphere in West Bengal. BJP says that they want complete justice in this matter and CBI investigation is the only way to bring out the truth.
