‘Digital Emergency’ in Nepal! Why Facebook, Insta, YouTube everything was closed overnight?

Post

Imagine that you wake up in the morning and find that your phone is neither a WhatsApp running, nor any new post is seen on Facebook nor the reels of Instagram are being scored. It seems as if the Internet world has ended!

This scary dream has become a reality in our neighboring country Nepal. The government there has ordered blocking the country’s most popular and largest social media platforms in one stroke, which has implemented a kind of ‘digital emergency’ in the entire country.

What is closed?

All these big platforms have now been closed in Nepal:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • X (Twitter)
  • YouTube
  • WhatsApp
  • And some time ago Tiktok Was also banned.

Simply put, the people of Nepal are now almost completely cut off from the digital world, which is part of us and your everyday life.

But … why did you have to take such a big and tough decision?

The reason behind this ban by the Nepal government is very serious.

  • “Threat to social harmony”: The government says that for some time these platforms were being used to post the ingredients that broke the society and spread hatred.
  • “Fake news and rumors”: The spread of false news and rumors had increased so much that it caused a threat to peace and security of the country.
  • Ignoring rules: According to the government, when these big tech companies were asked to curb these issues, they reluctant to follow the rules.

When it came to the atmosphere and security of the country, the government took tough steps and decided to lock all these platforms.

What will be its effect?

This decision is like a two -edged sword for Nepal.

  • On the one hand, the government hopes that this will stop the market of hatred and rumors in the country.
  • But on the other hand, it has raised a big question on the ‘freedom of expression’ of crores of common people. Millions of small traders, creators and common people whose business and social life were on these apps, their world has been destroyed in a moment.

Now the eyes of the whole world are on Nepal whether this ‘digital blackout’ will be successful in calming the society there, or it will give rise to a large citizen dissatisfaction.
