With the results of the much-discussed and politically very important midterm elections of the United States coming out, a major upheaval has been seen in American politics. President Donald Trump’s ruling Republican Party has suffered a major setback amid tough contests in both houses. The opposition Democratic Party has made historic gains in securing majority and control in both the important houses of Parliament—the House of Representatives and the Senate. As the initial trends of this unexpected and unilateral mandate emerged, President Donald Trump has given clear indications of accepting the defeat of his party. While there is an atmosphere of great enthusiasm in the opposition camp after this defeat, it is going to be an extremely difficult and challenging task for the White House to run the legislative business and implement its policies in the next two years.

Election analysts believe that historically US midterm elections have always been viewed as a public referendum on the performance and policies of the current President. In this election, the anger of the voters regarding rising inflation, foreign policy and social issues in the country has clearly been reflected in the ballot boxes. The Republican Party has completely failed to save its slight majority in the lower house of Parliament. The data coming from across the country has made it clear that the American people, giving priority to the balance of power (Check and Balance), have taken a historic decision to hand over the keys of Parliament to the opposition Democrats.
President Donald Trump posted his first detailed and aggressive response on his official social media platform ‘Truth Social’ soon after the party lagged behind in the election results. Trump distanced himself from the performance of the Republican Party in the elections and directly said that he was not personally in the fray as a candidate in this entire election. He wrote in his post, “I was not a candidate in this election! If I myself had joined the election race and my name was on the ballot paper, we would have won with a huge margin and an overwhelming majority!” However, political commentators immediately reminded that during the entire election campaign, President Trump had made an emotional appeal to the public in public meetings across the country that while casting their vote, they should assume that he himself is the candidate on every seat and that every vote given to Republican candidates is going directly in his name.
Along with this, President Trump, in a special interview given to The New York Times, adopted a very serious and realistic stance and openly accepted the defeat of his party. He said, “I am ready to fully accept these election results. We cannot turn away from the results. The Democrats are now in a very strong position of gaining control of both the House and the Senate. We look forward to working closely with the Democrats in the future and we are excited to have conversations with them. I am confident that in the interest of the country, both of us will find some positive path through dialogue.” This changed conciliatory tone of Trump shows that in front of a divided Congress, he will have to make compromises to carry forward his agenda.
In this great contest that concluded on Tuesday, voting was held simultaneously for all 435 seats of the lower house of the US Parliament i.e. the House of Representatives. Just before the election, the Republican Party had a very narrow majority in the House, where the party had 218 seats and the Democrats had 214 seats. In the initial vote counting trends, the opposition Democratic Party has succeeded in defeating Republican MPs in many important battleground districts, taking a huge lead in more than 147 key seats. On the other hand, President Trump’s Republican Party could lead only on 88 seats, making it clear that the post of Speaker of the Lower House is now going to go to the Democrats.

Talking about the Upper House i.e. Senate, this time voting was held on 35 seats out of the total 100 member Senate. The magic figure for majority in the Senate is 51 seats. Before the vote, the Republican Party had 53 seats in the Senate, while the Democratic Party had 45 seats and 2 independent lawmakers who are always in alliance with the Democrats, making the effective ratio 53-47. In the Senate elections held this time too, Democratic Party candidates have taken lead in many closely contested seats. Due to this, the legislative power of the US Parliament appears to be completely slipping into the favor of the Democratic Party, which will become the biggest constitutional obstacle for the President in implementing new policies and passing the budget.

Amidst this national upheaval, very interesting and historic individual results have also emerged from some states. In Florida’s extremely important and high-profile gubernatorial election, Republican Party’s flamboyant leader Byron Donalds registered a landslide victory and took charge of the state. This victory of Byron Donalds brought a big relief for the Republican Party in that coastal state, where the party retained its old hold.

On the other hand, for the Indian diaspora and the South Asian community, a very proud and historic news came out from Florida itself. Pia Dandiya, a talented leader of Indian origin, has created history by winning the prestigious seat of the House of Representatives from the 22nd Congressional District of Florida. Despite tough competition in the tough redrawn constituency, Piya Dandiya won the hearts of voters on the basis of her grassroots campaign, expansion of health services and issues of education reform. His historic victory has once again proved the ever-increasing influence, diversity and democratic strength of the Indian diaspora within the US Parliament on the global stage.
